Uncleansed CD Release Show
What a pummeling evening of death metal and all that witnessed saw a bit of underground metal history. With UNCLEANSED releasing their long awaited cd "Domination of the Faithful," and DEMONIACAL GENUFLECTION releasing "The Ministers of Lamentation" for free download via their website only days before, this show was certainly a showcase for both bands.
SADISTIC BUTCHERING opened the evening in true sick fashion. A one piece, the ultra guttural and brutal death metal was in your face and over before you know what the hell had happened! Up next, the crowd were treated to the sounds of San Marcos’ PROLICIDE, a new band (they told us so from the stage) and I’d say the verdict is still out on these guys, being that they are young and finding their way. One thing some of us noticed is that most of the on stage banter between songs was done by guitarist Metal Mike from the side of the stage and not vocalist Brutal Justin who was center stage. Reminded me of old school BLACK SABBATH where guitarist Tony Iommi was center stage while a young Ozzy was to the side. An interesting observation if nothing else.
VIRAL LOAD was up next and they did not disappoint. Fans of ultra low and guttural death metal would have been hard pressed to be upset. Guitarist/vocalist Shawn Whittaker must be commended for his performance, which could be viewed as a warm up for his set later in the evening, but you’d be mistaken as there was no warm up. It was like a switch was just flicked on and at full steam you were bulldozed over. The energy was unrelenting and was the perfect setup for what was to come next.
DEMONIACAL GENUFLECTION took to the stage, performing selections from their aforementioned Ministers… release and the atmosphere was pretty damn crushing. Cascading waves of doom, with counteracting spasms of death metal and splashes of everything else in between, this cd will go down as one of my faves of the year, hell, they even make a SAMAEL song sound good! My only complaint would be that some of the intense atmosphere is killed when the vocalist leads into songs as if we were at a rap concert. When your crowd is ready to bow at the throne of Lucifer… lol, the last thing they probably want to hear is “what up bitches?” Not sure if that is an exact quote, but it was something to that effect a few times… Aside from that, simply killer and I look forward to the next show, the next release, tour and everything else to follow!
Bringing the evening’s festivities to a close, the mighty UNCLEANSED appeared to the sounds of hell running amok and just laid waste to everyone. Their brand of intense, technical, yet purely brutal death metal was an orchestra to these ears. Watching vocalist Shawn Whittaker’s facial contortions while performing this insanity is entertainment in and of itself. It was wonderful to see guitarist Jim Case doing what he does best and in great spirits! A true inspiration indeed! These guys are raising the bar and I strongly urge everyone into brutal Texas death metal to pick up a copy of their new cd and crank it till the angels fall from the sky!
Kudos to the Adversary and Walter’s for continuing to be the house in Houston for extreme metal.
